I DID IT. i moved to self-hosted wordpress.
the road was hard and it was kind of a pain in the neck* and it is MOST DEFINITELY a work in progress, but I DID IT. WOOO ICE CREAM FOR EVERYONE.
now, you might be thinking: what the heck madeline?? you didn’t even discuss that with us? NO, GOOD SIR, I DID NOT. sorryyy. on monday of this week i had the innocent idea of “hey this would actually be a great time to become self-hosted.” this little inkling of an idea stayed inside my little peabrain allllll week until i finally decided LET’S DO THIS and moved on thursday. the end. i talked to May at Forever and Everly** about this once or twice, but i don’t think i told anyone else??
sorry if i confused you with the change. again.
*no really. wordpress/bluehost killed me once or twice.
**AHHH she was so sweet and supportive about my decision and the best blogging friend ever <3
so why the heck did you move??
i’ll tell you.
the seo for blogger kinda sucks / i wanted more community
i had a great time blogging with blogspot/blogger, but if i’m being completely honest, it’s lonely out there. i feel that the community isn’t as close as with wordpress, and it’s really hard to be discovered (and find other people) when you’re on blogger.
my blog has been rather stagnant lately, i’ll admit. while i do blog for myself and not the followers, it is kind of discouraging to see that almost no one is finding your blog. i love having a voice in this community, and i really want to grow my viewership and meet some new people
but seriously. the seo for blogger sucks.
if you’ve ever blogged on blogger with a custom theme (bc that’s the only way to make your blog remotely attractive at all), you’ll know that it is REALLY FRUSTRATING when you want to change something. you have to go straight to the code to fix something, which in all honesty, is really scary to me. i’m fine with CSS and surface level changes, but when it comes to major changes (like adding a featured posts slider or something) NOPE I’M OUT. with wordpress, it’s easier for me to make the changes i want, and i have so. many. options for customization.
it was time for a change.
i’d had my previous theme (you know, the masonry grid layout one) for almost a year, and i was honestly kinda tired of it. i have a lot more options for changing things up with this new theme (although i’m still figuring everything out).
i’ve totally changed my branding. i did the whole “watercolor flowers and thick brush fonts thing” for a long while , and it was time for me to do something different, preferably something more sophisticated(?is this the right word?). you’ll still be seeing some of my signature flower graphics, but much less often than before.
you know what’s ironic? i JUST made my blog designing tips post + media kit, and THEN I GO AND CHANGE EVERYTHING. gosh madeline, follow your own advice and be consistent! i should probably go update that post with a new media kit…
a mini life update
this next part also plays into why i moved and rebranded. so, last spring in my march wrap-up post, i mentioned that i had exciting news but wasn’t quite ready to share it yet. maybe some of my long-time subscribers remember this?? no? ok.
well, this exciting news that i am now ready to share since it goes into effect next week, is that i am going to boarding school for the rest of my high school career!! i’ve been packing for the past few weeks, and i’ll be moving my life (all my clothes, belongings, SOME BOOKS) from Alabama to New Hampshire by the middle of next week. this is a huge but exciting change for me. i mean, i’ll see the leaves really change for fall for the first time, experience a frigid winter for the first time, and EEP I’M SO EXCITED.
but along with all this excitement comes the fact that i’m not going to have as much free time (for blogging and reading). you may be thinking: but why did you decided to self-host if you’re not even sure that you’ll be able to blog?? WAIT, wait. i’ll still be posting on this blog– i’ll make time for it if it kills me. i love this community, and do you really think that i would give up on all the work i’ve been doing for the past year?? HECK NO. i’ve worked hard on this blog and i’m not going to throw it away. buying my domain + hosting is kinda my insurance that i’ll post this year.
about the branding change in relation to school: making those watercolor flower post headers TAKES ME FOREVERRRRR. i do it all from scratch and place every single object individually. it’s not the most efficient thing in the world. i’m not going to have time to do that this school year, thus the new photo headers. actually, i’m liking this new post header format– it’s been a good change. it’s still very ~aesthetic~ without taking so much time.
the downside of leaving for boarding school is the fact that i can only bring a small fraction of the books i own with me :((( so far, i’ve decided to bring these books: the Shades of Magic Series*, the Raven Cycle Series, I’ll Give You the Sun, Vicious, All the Crooked Saints, and i think that’s it?? tbh, i’ll probably sneak a few more books into my luggage here and there. i gotta have a good assortment of books to take pictures of and reread, right??
that’s about it for the life update.
note: i now have a wordpress follow button in my sidebar! so if you use the wordpress reader, you can follow me using that! ok. that’s all.
are you as excited as i am about the fact that i’ve switched to self-hosted wordpress?? did you enjoy the virtual ice cream i sent through my computer? what other books should i bring with me to school? ARE YOU GENERALLY PUMPED RIGHT NOW?
