hello! and welcome back to the universe in which i rant about fantasy 25/8!!!
since i never managed to get around to the whole “2018 ANTICIPATED READS OMG” post, i’m just gonna slide this post into my blog two months late like the shameful book blogger i am.
for some reason, i don’t entirely remember, i took a break from fantasy last year (or at least partly) and read A LOT more contemporary/magical realism. anyway, Normal MadelineTM is back to the program, and ready to read all the fantasy of ever!!! i’ve seen so many diverse fantasies set for release in 2018, which is probably the reason why i’m so hype about reading epic fantasy again.
so get ready to load your tbrs up with all the amazingness of 2018 fantasy. and this won’t be in order of release– i’m too lazy for that, sorry.
01. The Cruel Prince by Holly Black
ok, let’s be honest here. who HAVEN’T i seen ranting and raving about this. i’ve heard this is so dark and delicious, and i’m so excited for the anti-hero/heroines in this. the stabiness and political intrigue seem to be A-grade as far as i can tell. I’M NOT KIDDING EVERYONE LOVES THIS AND I’M SLIGHTLY SUSPICIOUS.
i’ve never really read Holly Black’s faerie books, and i’m planning on reading The Darkest Part of the Forest in preparation this month.
02. Ace of Shades by Amanda Foody
so this looks super fun + epically epic. the aesthetic seems to be con men + casinos + trickery and i’m all here for it. also, @ilsa i’ve seen you ranting about how excited you are about this, and it’s rubbed off on me. congrats ! you’ve turned me to the dark side.
basically, i’ve never really read any Amanda Foody’s books (Daughter of the Burning City) but i’m still excited nonetheless.
03. Circe by Madeline Miller
ayyyy name twins.
so Madeline Miller is the Amazing Author of The Song of Achilles, the wonderful and gay retelling of Achilles/Patroclus in the Iliad. FIRST OF ALL, i am complete and utter trash for anything about the classics or greek mythology. CIRCE IS AN ENTIRE FREAKING RETELLING OF A CLASSIC MYTH I’M DEAD. second of all, i’ve glimpsed the cover on instagram with my own two eyes and it’s gorgeous. i’m sold,, YES PLS.
the aesthetics are gonna be real intense, i’m telling you.
04. Girls of Paper and Fire by Natasha Ngan
“ASIANS! IN! FANTASY!” i scream from the rooftops, giddy with excitement. *wakes up everyone who’s trying to sleep*
for some reason, there are never many asian fantasies coming out, which is nuts because asian rep in fantasy is the best thing ever. also this is gay Asian fantasy, so double thumbs up for double the rep. i can’t wait until october, my dudes. i really can’t.
just look at the beautiful WOC on the cover! and we didn’t even have to rerelease it with a new cover, huh.
idk how i didn’t know about this sooner. i saw may’s update for it just yesterday and i haven’t stopped smiling since.
05. The Phoenix Empress by K. Arsenault Rivera (#2)
can i hear it for MORE ASIAN gay FANTASY?? YES VICTORY. this is the second in the series; the first, The Tiger’s Daughter, was so wonderful. i originally picked it up because The Queen Herself VE Schwab blurbed it, and i never looked back.
06. Furyborn by Claire Legrand
this seems to be the Highly Anticipated Fantasy of the year, which make me slightly nervous because i never seem to mesh well with those. 500 whole pages of assassins and magic tho!! and yes i’m one of those fiends who loves reading books the size of houses. :)) also, i’ve heard this is has a bi MC which is super exciting!
what the heck I WANT TO BE ACCEPTED FOR THE ARC OF THIS SO SO BAD.
07. City of Ghosts by Victoria Schwab
listen y’all. i don’t even care that this is middle grade. i am gonna read the heck out of this when it comes out in august because it’s freakin VE SCHWAB. you know how i feel. i’m getting good vibes from that little cat peepin out on the cover.
08. Children of Blood and Bone by Tomi Adeyemi
another diverse fantasy!! this is inspired by West Africa, and i’m all here for it. i’ve heard amazing things from goodreads frens. i’ve heard amazing things on twitter. amazing things from instagram. THE BOOK COMMUNITY LOVES THIS and it’s 500 page! i think YES.
09. Reign of the Fallen by Sarah Glenn Marsh
i’ve heard this is completely bad ass, and this is a fantasy where gender equality is actually the norm?? i shouldn’t have to gasp in excitement at that but that’s another discussion i’ve also heard there’s a lot of queer rep in this + the cover is just plain awesome.
since this has already come out, let me know down below whether you’ve read this + whether you liked it!! <3
10. Vengeful by V.E. Schwab
perhaps my most anticipated book of this year?? who knows??
dunno if you can even pretend to consider this fantasy (perhaps urban fantasy??) but i don’t care because VICTOR! ELI! DOL!! SYDNEY! i’ve missed this world, and Vicious is one of the best books i’ve read,, of all time.
ALSO, vicious is getting a cover redesign (!!!) this May, and I CAN FINALLY GET A HARDCOVER OF VICIOUS to go on my VE Schwab shelf. my collection will nearly be complete.
SO BEAUTIFUL AND MINIMAL MY EYES HAVE BEEN BLESSED. and it matches the Shades of Magic kinda !!
what 2018 releases are you looking forward to? any specific fantasy releases you’re highly anticipating? what other (pref diverse) fantasies should i check out this year? do you love long monstrously-big books? DO YOU LOVE VE SCHWAB AS MUCH AS I DO.
p.s. i tried a new blog layout for this post today, just to test it out! (full width vs sidebar) which do you guys prefer? lemme know below. just tryna improve the reading experience for everyone 😉
