it’s time for another installment of ‘book recommendations inspired by music’ series!
tbh my melodrama book recs post was one of my favorites ever to write, and i knew that i needed to make this a series ~ ergo, the existence of this post. and how could i not do a post like this that was NOT about my faveeee band Coldplay??? i mean, it was basically a requirement for me as a book blogger + coldplay lover to do this post. basically. this isn’t actually my favorite coldplay album. i like it, but i don’t LOVE it y’know?
and also, happy october! for the first time, i’ve actually been experiencing the leaves changing colors for fall which has been super cool. they don’t do that at home lol.
just like my last post, i would recommend listening to the album at the same time you read the post (if you can), so you can get the ~full experience~ of my book recommendations!
all i can think about is you
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater
i mentioned this in my book review of All the Crooked Saints, but Maggie Stiefvater has such a way of developing magical worlds. she’s amazing. and this song reminds me of the magical island setting of The Scorpio Races.
also, the lyric video for this song is absolutely gorgeous, and i would recommend watching it for a whole other dimension of why this song reminds me of The Scorpio Races.
Fish fell out of water
Bird stuck on the ground
Chaos giving orders
Everything is upside down
-all i can think about is you by coldplay
miracles (something special)
I’ll Give You the Sun by Jandy Nelson
originally, i’d thought i would put All the Crooked Saints for this song, but then i was like WAIT this has a totally wrong atmosphere and instrumentals for that beautiful book. no offense miracles but you’re not right for AtCS (but don’t worry we’ll come back to you later maggie stiefvater hehe).
and then i remembered MY FAVE I’ll Give You the Sun aka my smol beautiful aesthetic child. traditionally, i would associate that book with a slower song but this one (both the lyrics and the sound) fit so well! both the book and the song remind me so much of summer and the ocean and the sun.
Oh, now I’m floating so high
I blossom and die
Send your storm and your lightning to strike
Me between the eyes
– miracles by coldplay
A L I E N S
Illuminae by Amie Kauffman and Jay Kristoff
i mean, Illuminae = space, aliens = space? GET IT? mostly the instrumentals of this song remind me of Illuminae, the lyrics less so. to me, while Illuminae is STRESSFUL AF, it’s also a book with such a fun atmosphere, one that reminds me of A L I E N S a lot.
Moving in the dead of night
We took photographs just some just so
History has some to know
We were moving at the speed of flight
-A L I E N S by coldplay
something just like this (tokyo remix)
The Percy Jackson Series by Rick Riordan (but tbh everything by uncle rick)
this song in general, but especially the tokyo remix with everyone singing along and being happy reminds me of the good old days when i was reading rick riordan’s books for the very first time. something just like this is a very optimistic song, and that feel reminds me mainly of the original Percy Jackson books when everyone was smol and wholesome and cute.
I’ve been reading books of old
The legends and the myths
Achilles and his gold
Hercules and his gifts
And Batman with his fists
And clearly I don’t see myself upon that list
– something just like this (tokyo remix) by coldplay
these lyrics especially remind me of the unassuming-hero-saves-the-world-trope we see a lot of in rick riordan’s books.
hypnotized (ep mix)
All the Crooked Saints by Maggie Stiefvater
aand we’re back to Queen Maggie. O M Geeee i love this song so much. just the lyrics (!!) and the sounds and everything. it’s completely beautiful and so… Coldplay.
All the Crooked Saints has quite a melancholy and solemn mood to it if you ask me, and Hypnotized feels the exact same way. both are so beautiful and they feel like they were meant for each other.
Been rusting in rubble
Running to a faint
Need a brand new coat of paint
I found myself in trouble
Thinking ’bout what ain’t
Never gonna be a saint
Saying float like an eagle
Fall like the rain
Pouring to put out the pain
Oh again and again
-hypnotized by coldplay
“never gonna be a saint” basically describes beatriz soria’s outlook on life. i mean, come on. they’re meant for each other.
