and apparently best of 2017 is now a mini series!!
i’ve realized that there is so much i love sharing with you guys besides just books, and i would definitely place myself into a literary+lifestyle category, instead of only blogging about books. i’m hoping to do more lifestyle posts as we transition into the new year, as i know i definitely won’t have as much time as in 2017 to read.
2017 has been a year of great music, both new and older (but discovered in 2017); it’s also been a year of listening to podcasts. i listen to a lot of audio content while running, on the plane, etc so i knew i had to share some faves of the year with you guys.
i’ll be dividing this post into the following parts! favorite albums, individual songs, newly discovered artists, and podcasts.
01. melodrama by lorde
um. i’ve talked about melodrama so. much. this year. it’s showed up on many of my monthly wrap-up playlists and i did a whole post about book recommendations based on the album. lorde’s voice is so beautiful, and the songs range from fun&boppy to sad for when you need to cry and get everything out. madeline approved.
faves from the album:
- Liability + Liability Reprise (PLS CHECK OUT CONAN GRAY’S COVER SO SO BEAUTIFUL)
- The Louvre (originally not my fave but now i love it !)
- Sober (Melodrama II)
02. dont smile at me by billie eilish
i haven’t talked about her much on this blog but MAN I LOVE BILLIE. her songs are so creepy and the lyrics are so clever. AND HER MAHOGANY SESSIONS ARE SO DARN GOOD. did i mention she’s my age?? she’s crazy talented i can’t. her brother also harmonizes in some of her songs + plays guitar + helps her write, and let me say, he is also awesome. whatta dynamic duo.
faves from the album:
- party favor
- my boy
- MAN THE WHOLE ALBUM IS BOSS
03. stranger in the alps by phoebe bridgers
phoebe’s music is so creepy and sad, and that’s what i love so much about it. the album isn’t too upbeat or hype, so i enjoy listening to it in the background when i’m writing/studying/etc. i’m surprised i haven’t heard more people talking about her!
also, this is shallow, but i love the art on the cover of this album. it’s so cool.
faves from the album
- smoke signals
- motion sickness
fave individual songs
01. grow & idle town by conan gray
i’m so proud of cone!! both the songs and their music videos are stunning, and i’m so stoked about his EP in 2018!!
02. radio by lana del rey
a song from back in 2012, but good all the same! lana’s voice is beautiful and creepy. both pluses.
03. how big, how blue, how beautiful by florence + the machine
i just recently started listening to a lot of florence + the machine in the past few months and i’m in love !
04. cherry wine by hozier
discovered this song in the past few weeks but I LOVE IT. somehow hozier manages to make a song about a difficult topic so beautiful. LISTEN TO THE MAHOGANY SESSION.
05. HEAVEN by troye sivan
the music video for this song is absolutely stunning, and it’s where i first discovered the song. please go watch it.
06. the blue neighborhood trilogy (also) by troye sivan
made up of WILD, FOOLS, and TALK ME DOWN. again, the music video/short film as well as the songs are BEAUTIFUL. GO WATCH IT HERE.
07. strangers by sigrid
a ! total ! bop !
great for running and/or jamming out by yourself in your bedroom.
fave new (to me) artists
01. billie eilish
no kidding. she’s amazing and what was i doing before i discovered her.
02. phoebe bridgers
03. maggie rogers
none of her songs were my absolute favorites of the year, but her songs are still beautiful so check her out!
her songs are so fun, and her album Don’t Kill My Vibe is definitely good for those days when you need something to cheer you up.
soooo i didn’t listen to that many different podcasts this year, but there were a couple that i really love! in 2018, i want to find a couple new podcasts to listen to. hmu in the comments with recommendations.
01. Dear Hank and John
a very “madeline” podcast. the podcast basically just discusses random topics and addresses questions from listeners with dubious advise. you learn so many random things which is what i love about it!!
thanks for getting me through cross country meet bus rides, hank and john.
02. Ladies Who Lunch
for one thing, i love Ingrid Nilsen. she’s one of the only half-asian famous people i know and generally, she’s an epic feminist person. i love all the guests that she and Cat bring onto the show, and they always discuss relatable, important topics. i always look forward to listening to their podcast on a run or plane ride!
